Mountain biking in Scotland is now a national success story. It attracts elite riders, grassroots participants, international tourists, and local communities. It’s estimated that 2.8 million mountain biking visits are made to the Scottish countryside each year, with around 7% of the adult population participating.

Focus On... Handball

Beyond the sports competitive edge, Handball can be a great sport for developing young people’s fundamental physical literacy skills. The core movements learned foster essential motor skills that underpin lifelong physical activity, as well as exposing young players to the fun and joy such movement can bring, so it is truly a win-win for everyone.

At its core, the “Shinty for Schools” programme is about increasing accessibility. Shinty has sometimes been seen as a sport confined to rural areas, but initiatives like this one hope to open it that up, showing children that the a game can be played by everyone.

As the number of clubs continue to increase across the country, Boxing Scotland are putting plans in place to ensure they not only develop and retain existing volunteers but establish national plans to attract and support a new generation of volunteers into the sport.
