Cathal Traquair (Cal), a lifelong football enthusiast, has discovered that group sport offers far more than just physical benefits—they can also provide a sense of community, belonging, and emotional well-being. Through his experience with walking football, Cal has found not only a way to stay active but also a new outlook on life.

The importance of group sport

Cal believes that everyone should consider participating in group sport. "Life is hard, we all know that," he says, "but here's one way to make it that bit easier.

"Group sport is a great way to boost your physical and mental health, with the exercise and the fresh air, but it's actually a lot more than that."

For Cal, the benefits of group sport go beyond just staying fit—they encompass emotional and social aspects that are just as crucial.

Why Walking Football? 

For Cal, football has always been a passion, but his journey with the sport hasn’t always been smooth. "See, all my life I’ve loved playing football, but I could never fit in due to my disability. I always felt isolated and a bit left out," he recalls. Traditional football posed challenges that made him feel excluded, and for years, this led to a sense of isolation.

However, everything changed when he discovered walking football in his local area. Walking football, a modified version of the game that is suitable for all levels of ability and fitness, provided Cal with an opportunity he had longed for his entire life. "Now that I'm a bit older, I realised that it doesn't need to be that way, ever since I found walking football in my local area," Cal explains.

This version of football allowed him to engage in a sport he loves without the demands that had previously held him back.

"It’s great and the exercise is good, but ultimately it gave me a sense of belonging and the chance to be a part of a team, something that I never felt before."

Through walking football, Cal has found camaraderie, support, and a renewed sense of self-worth.

A message to others

Cal’s experience has made him a strong advocate for group sport, particularly for those who may feel sidelined due to physical limitations or other challenges.

"I'd highly recommend trying group sport,"

he advises. "Not only does it improve your mental and physical health, but it also gives you the opportunity to be the best version of you."
