Whether it is a coach acknowledging an athlete’s progression or a volunteer being celebrated at a glitzy awards event, recognition in sport matters.
At the heart of Scottish sport are the people who make it happen – young leaders, volunteers, coaches, officials, volunteers and athletes – and sportscotland understands the importance of recognising these key individuals.
Recognition can inspire and encourage people to push forward and work harder while offering an opportunity to acknowledge and thank those who do it all for the love of sport.
There are many ways in which sportscotland recognise and celebrate contribution to sport each year, including:
- Young Ambassadors programme
- Coaching, Officiating and Volunteering Awards
- Young people's sport panel
- School Sport Award
- Sunday Mail sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards
Young Ambassadors
Each year, two pupils from each secondary school in Scotland are recognised as leaders in sport and are chosen to become Young Ambassadors. The Young Ambassadors programme is an energetic National Lottery-funded initiative that develops young leaders in sport and tasks them with promoting sport and inspiring other young people to get involved in sport in their schools and local communities.
There have been more than 3,500 Young Ambassadors in Scotland since the programme started in 2012, with 650 new Young Ambassadors attending conferences each year. Each month exceptional Young Ambassadors are also recognised through the Young Ambassador of the Month campaign.

Young people's sport panel
The Young people's sport panel is a programme led by sportscotland and supported by Young Scot. A group of young people are chosen from across Scotland to ensure that the younger generation is fully engaged with the decision-making process of sport. They represent the views of young people and make sure those views are incorporated into how sport is organised and developed in Scotland.

School Sport Award
The sportscotland School Sport Award is a National Lottery-funded initiative designed to recognise schools who excel at putting sport and physical education (PE) at the heart of their planning, practice and ethos. The award encourages schools to continuously improve PE and sport opportunities in their school by urging schools to self-reflect and explore areas for development.
The award also helps schools understand the importance or putting young people at the forefront of the decision making and planning of PE and sport, and focus on recognising and celebrating sporting success in school.
