The team behind the team

45 sportscotland staff set to support Team Scotland

With the opening ceremony just days away, the nation is looking forward to watching a record-breaking 260 Team Scotland athletes compete on the world stage in Birmingham.

And these fantastic athletes will not be heading to Birmingham alone, with 45 sportscotland staff joining Team Scotland throughout their journey in this summer’s Games.

With roles ranging from chief medical officer to physiotherapists and video analysis, the Team Behind The Team will provide unique and support to all of the athletes within Team Scotland.

The sportscotland support staff have also been integral to the planning and logistics for the Games. With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting  much of the build up to Birmingham, staff at the sportscotland institute of sport and high-performance teams have worked extremely hard to make sure that Scotland’s athletes still managed to get world-class training and preparation for the Games.

Director of High Performance at sportscotland, Mike Whittingham, said: “Over the past four years, the sportscotland institute of sport and high-performance team have made the preparation for these games a major priority.

''The professional and skilled group of staff joining Team Scotland in Birmingham are an outstanding example of the support that is provided week in and week out to ensure that these athletes are prepared for competition.’’

In addition to the sportscotland institute of sport staff, two of the wider sportscotland staff have been appointed as mentors on the 2022 Achieve Programme, a collaboration between Team Scotland, sportscotland and the Team Scotland Youth Trust. Lead Manager for School and Community Sport, Ailsa Wylie, and Performance Lifestyle advisor, Cameron Brodie, who both competed for Team Scotland in 2010 and 2014 will take up mentor roles during the Games. The aim of the Achieve Programme is to enable young athletes and coaches to gain knowledge and experience of a multi-sport environment.

Team Scotland will also be able to call on additional resources from institute staff who don’t travel to Birmingham, giving wraparound support to the team in the build-up to the Games, during the Games themselves and after competition has ended.

Stewart Harris, CEO of sportscotland, added: “Scotland’s world-class sporting system is supported by the brilliant work of the the sportscotland institute of sport do and that will be evident in Birmingham.”
