Experts from sportscotland are set to support Scottish athletes during the 2026 Commonwealth Games

Twenty-seven sportscotland staff will join colleagues from across the sporting system as part of the staff team supporting Team Scotland athletes as the Commonwealth Games returns to Glasgow.

With the opening ceremony on July 23rd growing ever closer the stage is set for a memorable 11 days of world-class sport.

Over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories are arriving in Scotland this month, 12 years on from the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Aiming to make their own piece of history will be 177 Scottish athletes competing across 10 sports and 6 para sports.

Behind every athlete flying around the track at the velodrome, racing to the finish line at Scotstoun or lining up on the starting blocks at Tollcross is a team of dedicated specialists whose expertise helps to ensure athletes are able to perform at their best when it matters most. Among these specialists on the Team Scotland support team will be 25 staff from the sportscotland institute of sport, bringing a wealth of experience to roles across sports medicine, physiotherapy, team management, nutrition, physical preparation, physiology and performance psychology.

Dr Carrie McCrea (pictured top) will be Team Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer, her third Games with Team Scotland, including as Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Birmingham 2022. She was also a member of the Team GB medical team at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she held the roles of Sport and Exercise Medical Doctor and Mental Health Lead. Her current roles also include providing performance medical support in elite motorsport, including Formula One, and she is a Sports and Exercise Medicine Doctor at the sportscotland institute of sport.
