New Directors Appointed

sportscotland, has announced the appointment of Rachel Barrington as Director of Operations and Craig Burn as Director of Sport.

The two newly created posts were filled after an extensive recruitment process and complete the sportscotland Senior Management Team led by Chief Executive, Forbes Dunlop.

Ms Barrington joins after 13 years at drinks giant Diageo where she was the Digital & Technology Director responsible for the corporate digital strategy, and plans & transformation programmes including award winning multi-million-pound initiatives such as the Johnnie Walker Whisky Experience. She is also chair of the elite swimming partnership in Edinburgh - SwimEdinburgh.

Mr Burn is currently Director of Strategy, Policy and Impacts at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. He’s part of the executive team for the world’s largest global cycling event in history that will bring together 13 world championships into one combined mega event in August. He was also the former CEO of Scottish Cycling.

Forbes Dunlop said, “Both Rachel and Craig have a fantastic track record in leadership and will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the team at sportscotland.""This is an incredibly important time for Scottish sport and Rachel and Craig will play pivotal roles in helping us maximise the opportunities and the challenges that lie ahead.""I am excited to have them on board and look forward to welcoming them both to sportscotland and to working with them in the months and years ahead.”

Rachel Barrington said, “Sport has done and continues to play an influential role in my life, whether it’s recreational sport with friends and family, competition or studying the Science of Sport.""I believe that there is nothing that brings people together better than sport."

“In this role, I aspire to leverage my 20 years of FTSE100 business experience to positively promote and develop sport in Scotland from grass roots participation to world class performance, that continues to evolve with the dynamic  and changing external environment.”

Craig Burn said, “I believe passionately in the power of sport, and the positive and critical contribution sport and physical activity makes to people’s lives, local communities, and wider society.

“Having worked for the organisation before, it is a huge privilege to re-join sportscotland as part of the senior management team and take up this exciting new role at a really important time for sport in our country. The current landscape for all sports is challenging but there are also boundless opportunities."

“I cannot wait to get started to play my part in leading and supporting the team and working with our partners and stakeholder to make sure we keep delivering at all levels across the sporting system.”

Barrington and Burn will take up their new roles in the Autumn.
