Tom Case Study Archery

Find Your Team - Tom's story

Feel part of something through Sporting Memories clubs

Feeling isolated following a stay in hospital and with few social connections, Tom, aged 85, is grateful to his friend who encouraged him to go along to one of Sporting Memories’ clubs.

Sporting Memories run weekly clubs to provide routine and regular social contact for older people who are lonely or isolated in their communities. Encouraging attendees to talk and reminisce about sport, the clubs are an informal, inclusive place for people to come together. As well as a guaranteed cuppa, the clubs also offer a chance to get involved in physical activity, supporting members to connect with one another whilst being active.

Broxburn Sporting Memories club member Tom spoke about his experience:

“The activity I’m involved in changes from week to week, sometimes we do archery, boccia or indoor curling. My favourite is archery because I think that using my upper body keeps me strong and that helps me when I’m gardening or doing a few odd jobs at home. I want to stay active so that I can be independent, which is really important to me as I live by myself.”

For Tom and others at the club, maintaining strength and balance through physical activity or sport is a great way to support their overall health and contributes towards a healthy lifestyle, no matter what age.

Tom also talked about how he enjoys the company of the other club members:

“Taking part in sports like archery and boccia gives us a chance for a wee bit of competition which is good fun. The club has become such a huge part of my life and it’s so important for elderly people to have groups like this.

“For a person of my age it’s a really good thing and it’s important that people know the club is here. I live on my own after my wife passed away 10 years ago and loneliness is such a horrible thing. Some people can go out and mix easily but I don’t, and coming to the club and making it part of my weekly routine has been brilliant.

The social aspect of it is vital and the guys who run the club are tremendous.”

Everyone is welcome to attend a Sporting Memories club. Some – but not all – of their members are living with dementia or low mood, or are isolated; others simply enjoy the opportunity to meet other people.

The club that Tom attends, Broxburn Sporting Memories club, meets every Wednesday from 10.30am to 12pm at Albyn Park, Broxburn. To find your local club visit the Sporting Memories website www.sportingmemories.uk/clubs
