As Scotland’s best young athletes prepare to take part in the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, hopes are it will be the start of something special on the global stage.
The 49 Team Scotland athletes, aged between 14 and 18 years, will compete in all seven of the sports on the Trinbago 2023 programme (Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Cycling, Netball, Rugby 7s, Swimming and Triathlon).
They will take their place amongst over 1,000 of the best young athletes from the 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth, as the majority experience an international multi-sport Games for the very first time.
And as the Scots taking part prepare for action, Chief Executive of sportscotland, Forbes Dunlop, and Sports Minister Maree Todd, wished them the best of luck ahead of the of sporting action.
Mr Dunlop said: “To be selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games is a fantastic achievement and is a result of years of hard work, skill, dedication and commitment. We hope all 49 athletes enjoy the moment, learn from the experience and we look forward to following their progress.
“On behalf of everyone at sportscotland, I want to wish them the very best of luck. It is their time to shine, I know they will give it their all.’’
Sports Minister Maree Todd said: “I want to extend good luck wishes to every athlete representing Scotland in the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago. This is a very exciting time for these athletes as the majority experience an international multi-sport Games for the very first time.
“I’m sure we will witness some inspiring performances, which I hope will encourage more people to take up a sport."
