Founded in 1898, Drumchapel Tennis Club has long been one of the area’s hidden gems. What began as a small group of tennis loving volunteers determined to create something positive has grown into the self titled “best wee club in Glasgow”.
The club has around 150 members, including young people, adults, families and older players. From its earliest days, it set out to be more than just a place to play, with a clear focus on encouragement and creating opportunities for people of all ages to get active and enjoy tennis.
Community sport depends on strong role models, and with 185 years of service between them, Eric Flack, Gordon Connor and Peter Watt have set a powerful example of leadership, care, commitment and generosity to club members.
Role models in action
From sweeping courts and fixing fences to coaching, organising socials and welcoming new members, Eric, Gordon and Peter’s behind the scenes efforts help create a place where people feel valued and inspired.
Club President Eric Flack has been part of Drumchapel Tennis Club for 75 years. He captures its spirit perfectly, saying:
“Drumchapel Tennis Club has always been about people first. The tennis is important, of course but it’s the friendships, the support and the sense of community that make it special. We want tennis to be affordable, accessible and available in Drumchapel”.
Vice President Gordon Connor, who has been part of the club for 60 years, speaks about the importance of leading by example:
“When young players see adults giving their time, helping others and showing commitment, it sends a powerful message. That’s how you build a culture that lasts”.
Pete Watt, 50 years a member explains the legacy created by the people involved and the inspiration they provide:
“Eric has been at the heart of Drumchapel Tennis Club, continuing a proud family legacy begun by his father, the club’s early President. He introduced Gordon and me to tennis when we were just five years old and like so many in the community, we’re incredibly grateful for his time, patience and encouragement. Today, we’re building on that legacy with a strong, dedicated committee, helping ensure the club continues to thrive for future generations growing up in the area.”
Part of a bigger picture
Drumchapel Tennis Club is a key partner within Drumchapel Sport, the area’s Community Sport Hub. This connection allows the club to collaborate and share resources with partners and local organisations to reach even more players.
Drumchapel Sport is part of the national sportscotland Community Sport Hub network. Funded by The National Lottery, the Community Sport Hub programme brings sports clubs and community organisations together to create stronger, safer, more sustainable and inclusive hubs, helping to increase the impact of sport and physical activity across communities in Scotland.
Through the Hub, the club plays an active role in shaping the wider sporting landscape of Drumchapel, ensuring that opportunities are accessible, inclusive and genuinely community led.
From the perspective of Community Sport Hub Officer, Grant Morrison, the club stands out for its authenticity and impact.
Grant said:
“Drumchapel Tennis Club is a brilliant example of what happens when a club identifies a need and responds with energy, care and consistency. The club doesn’t just deliver sport, it provides support and opportunity for the local community.”
The partnership has strengthened pathways for young people, supported volunteers and helped the club deliver programmes that respond directly to local needs. It’s a model of how community sport can thrive when organisations work together with shared purpose.
The club’s impact extends well beyond its courts, working with eight local primary schools, two nurseries and targeted groups including adults with learning disabilities, people experiencing mental health challenges and community organisations such as Men Matter Scotland. As a true family club, it offers a welcoming environment where everyone can participate.
Drumchapel Tennis Club is always open to new members, volunteers and supporters. Whether you’re picking up a racket for the first time, returning to the sport or simply looking for a way to contribute to your community, there’s a place for you.
