Adult indoor contact sport is to resume on Monday 24 January after the Scottish Government announced that temporary restrictions would be lifted.
It has also been confirmed that temporary measures in place to limit attendances at indoor sporting events are also to be relaxed from the same day.
Enhanced measures had been in place since 26 December in response to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Omicron variant and a rise in cases across the country.
Today’s announcement follows an earlier decision to relax restrictions on attendances at large-scale outdoor spectator events from Monday this week.
National agency for sport, sportscotland, has been working closely with Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport (SGBs) to help manage challenges relating to recent restrictions.
Chief Executive of sportscotland, Stewart Harris, said: “The sport sector has shown real resilience over the course of the pandemic and has again have played a key role in helping support public health measures over the past four weeks.
“We know it has been an incredibly difficult and frustrating period for many sports and we are grateful to them for their patience and understanding.
"We are now fully focused on supporting SGBs and clubs as they work towards the resumption of adult indoor-contact sport and the return of spectators in greater numbers to indoor events.
“While this is good news we must continue to be vigilant against the virus and continue to follow the latest public health guidance.”
Chair of the SGB Chief Executive Officer Forum, Vinny Bryson, said: “We have been working hard to demonstrate the positive role that sport and physical activity has played, and continues to play in the nation’s long-term recovery from Coronavirus.
“Confirmation that the temporary public health measures affecting sport are to be lifted from next week is welcome news and a step in the right direction.
"The resumption of adult indoor contact sport will help keep people active at this difficult time and will have a positive effect on the physical and mental wellbeing of participants.”
