Team Scotland has recorded it's best ever performance at an away Commonwealth Games.
Birmingham 2022 saw Scottish athletes win 51 medals (13 gold, 11 silver and 27 bronze), a total which has only been bettered at Glasgow 2014.
Director of High Performance at sportscotland, Mike Whittingham, said, ‘’What a truly fantastic Commonwealth Games this has been for Team Scotland, with so many of our nation’s athletes shining on the world stage. Their success at these games is a testament to the years of hard work and dedication from these athletes and their coaching teams and is demonstrating that Scotland's approach to developing a sporting pathway to performance sport is delivering.’’
Scottish Swimmers produced a phenomenal performance in the pool, with Duncan Scott taking home six medals (two golds and four bronze). Ross Murdoch, in his final games, and Katie Shanahan on her games debut, won three bronze medals each.
Eilish McColgan’s gold medal winning run in the Women’s 10,000m was undoubtedly one of the moments of the Games, as well as Laura Muir getting her hands on the 1500m gold.
There was a number of record breakers in Birmingham, including the Para Lawn Bowls athletes claiming 3 gold medals, and the Team Scotland Boxing team who won three gold medals for the first time at a single Games.
After finishing fourth at both the Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 games, Team Scotland flagbearer Micky Yule finally won an illustrious Commonwealth bronze medal in the para-powerlifting.
Mike Whittingham, said, ‘’For many of those medal-winning athletes, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games marked the next step on an incredible sporting journey, and we are thrilled for each and every one of them who have brought home a medal.’’
“And while we are of course delighted with the medal successes, I also want to pay tribute to the many athletes who achieved a personal best and to every single member of the team for the incredible dedication they have shown to the Games. We are proud to have supported so many of these athletes on their journey to Birmingham through National Lottery and Scottish Government investment in their sports, coaches, support staff and facilities.’’
The Team Behind the Team
Team Scotland's efforts were supported by a record contingent of staff, with 45 sportscotland staff joining Team Scotland throughout their journey in this summer’s Games. The sportscotland support staff have also been integral to the planning and logistics for the Games. Staff at the sportscotland institute of sport and high-performance teams have worked extremely hard to make sure that Scotland’s athletes still managed to get world-class training and preparation for the Games.
