When schedules get busy around exam time or assessment deadlines, it can feel like sport and physical activity is less of a priority and that every hour needs to be used for studying. However, building in even short bursts of sport and physical activity can be really beneficial - not only for a bit of time away, but also helping to reduce stress and anxiety, boost concentration and improve overall wellbeing.
This is something which members of our Young People's Sport Panel (YPSP) feel strongly about, and have shared their own experiences and tips for staying active.

Last year, when I was sitting my higher exams, I went to dance 4 times a week and was lucky enough to feel like I managed to cope with the balance between studying and dance. I think dance actually really helped me in my studying as it gave me an escape and I got to see my friends which is so important for your mental health, especially when stressed. The one piece of advice I would give is to make a plan and have good time management, which means trying to not procrastinate!

I found dancing during a low point in my life, where the stress of exams and health concerns piled up. The ability to tell a story and vent all emotions through my dancing is something I am so incredibly grateful for, and supported me mentally through a really tough time.

Maintaining good mental health is crucial during exam time. During my exams, I feel it is important to take part in sports as it is a very good way to manage stress, reduce anxiety and take your mind off studies. The escape I get from sports allows me to get back to my studies with a clearer mind.

Sport really helps my mental health, especially when things get stressful. It gives me space to switch off, feel more balanced, and stay positive during busy times like exams.

During exams it is normal to feel stressed and anxious. Whilst spending time studying it is also so important to make sure you keep your body fit as well as your mind 🧠⚡️ Between studying, heading out for exercise can make a massive difference to your overall mood 💗🤩

Staying physically active during exam time is incredibly important. This period can be particularly stressful, and maintaining regular physical activity is arguably even more crucial during this time than at others. Exercise offers numerous benefits, including better sleep, higher energy levels, enhanced cognitive function, and overall improved physical and mental health-all essential for effective studying. During my own exams, I used physical activity as a way to take breaks from studying and to maintain social connections by exercising with friends.
Without this routine, I genuinely believe my academic performance would have suffered.
