I first began leading in sport during the summer of 2017 at the Tryst Community Sports Club (TCSC) summer camps. The Tryst provided great opportunities for me to develop my confidence coaching in a range of sports.
It allowed me to progress from assisting with activities to planning and leading sessions on my own.
After being involved with the summer camps I began to coach after school swimming sessions for S1 to 3 pupils. The Tryst facilitated me to complete my pool lifeguarding and swim teaching qualification. Both of these qualifications have allowed me to volunteer and work in sports leadership.
Transferable skills
Taking part in sports leadership developed my confidence, communication skills and teamwork.
Coaching allows you to become more confident within yourself whilst also showing you how to work and problem solve with others.
I hope these skills will be something I can take with me later in life and apply to future jobs and leadership roles.
My involvement in sports leadership has given me countless opportunities. Without it I would not have my role on both the sportscotland and Falkirk Young People’s Sports Panel and I would not have my current job.
Get involved!
The benefits of young people being involved in sports leadership extend far beyond the development of their physical sporting ability. It gives confidence, organisation and team building skills.
To anyone considering becoming involved with sports leadership, just begin. Look to your local sports hubs and clubs, it does not have to be a sport you are already advanced in. You just need the passion and excitement to get other people involved in sport!
