Twelve sportscotland staff have joined colleagues from the other Home Country Sports Institutes, governing bodies of sport and wider partners to form the ‘Team behind the team' for Paris 2024.
There will be 34 of Scotland’s top athletes competing against the world’s best for Team GB in Paris. They will be supported throughout their journey at the Games by a 43-person performance services team spread across the Olympic Village, as well as Team GB’s own performance venues: Preparation Camps and The Performance Lodge.
That staffing resource will be in addition to many sport specific roles in Paris which will ensure Team GB’s athletes have everything required to perform at their best on the biggest stage.
Staff from the sportscotland institute of sport will provide support in areas such as nutrition, physiotherapy, physical preparation and medicine.
Niall Elliott, Head of Sports Medicine for sportscotland and the BOA’s Chief Medical Officer, has headed up the medical team for Team GB across their Preparation Camps in Saint Germain-en-Laye and Reims. Assistant Regional Performance Manager at sportscotland, Jamie Bowie, will join the ParalympicsGB staff team during the Paralympic Games
The sportscotland support staff team have also been integral to the planning and logistics for the Games.
Director of Sport at sportscotland, Craig Burn, said: “The sportscotland institute of sport and high-performance team have made the preparation for these Games a major priority.
"The professional and skilled group of staff joining Team GB and ParalympicsGB are an outstanding example of the support that is provided week in and week out to Scottish athletes.
“The wide range of specialist services provided by the sportscotland institute of sport is key to helping athletes perform at their best, as is the continued support of their clubs, coaches and governing bodies, and not forgetting their families.
“We are proud to play a part in what is a team effort to ensure Scotland’s athletes are ready to compete with the best on the world stage.”
Greg Retter, the BOA’s Head of Performance Services will lead the staff team in Paris, he said: “This multi-disciplinary team brings together 43 highly experienced practitioners from across the UK high performance sport network and includes doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, performance scientists, performance analysts, nutritionists and (performance) chefs.
“Alongside the sports own performance staff, the HQ performance services team form an integral part of the support that the athletes receive from Team GB, and following a rigorous selection process I’m confident we have a highly skilled team of performance staff supporting our athletes and sports to deliver success at the Paris Games.”
