sportscotland experts set to support athletes at Milano Cortina

Specialists from sportscotland will join the support team for Team GB and ParalympicsGB

Seven sportscotland staff will join colleagues at Team GB and ParalympicsGB as part of the ‘team behind the team’ for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Scotland’s top athletes from across a range of winter sports will compete against the world’s best for Team GB and ParalympicsGB at the Olympic Winter Games in February and the Paralympic Winter Games in March.

Behind every athlete carving up the ice or flying down the slopes is a team of dedicated specialists whose expertise helps to ensure athletes are able to perform at their best when it matters most. Among these specialists will be seven staff from the sportscotland institute of sport, bringing a wealth of experience to roles across sports medicine and physiotherapy.

Dr Michelle Jeffrey, who is Sports Medicine Lead at the sportscotland institute of sport (SIS) has been named Chief Medical Officer for ParalympicsGB, after serving as reserve doctor for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Dr Jeffrey brings more than two decades of experience in sport and exercise medicine. Her previous roles include working with Team GB, Team Scotland, and serving as an event doctor at various high-profile competitions.

Dr Michelle Jeffrey said: “It’s a huge honour to have the chance to work with such a dedicated and talented team at the Milano Cortina Paralympic Games.

“Together we will do all we can to support the athletes and ensure they are best prepared for what will be one of the biggest moments in their careers.”

Joining Dr Jeffrey in the ParalympicsGB team will be sportscotland physiotherapist Kerry O’Hara who will work with British Para Nordic skier, Scotland’s Scott Meenagh.

Sarah McGregor, a sportscotland nurse, will provide medical support to the wheelchair curling team while Maggie Bush will be the curlers dedicated physio.

Kelly Horne will be Team GB’s Head Physiotherapist, bringing extensive Games experience from previous roles with Team GB and Team Scotland. Physio Keith Berry will work exclusively with the all-Scottish men and women’s curling team.

Chief Executive of sportscotland, Forbes Dunlop, said:

“Alongside our partners including Team GB, ParalympicsGB and sport governing bodies, the sportscotland institute of sport, high-performance and wider teams, have been working hard to support athletes in the build up to Milano Cortina.

"The professional and skilled group of staff who will support the athletes in Italy are an outstanding example of the support that is provided week in and week out to ensure athletes are prepared for competition.

“We are proud to be part of what is a team effort to ensure Scotland’s athletes are ready to compete on the world stage.”

Eve Muirhead OBE, Team GB Chef de Mission, said:

"Supporting athletes at an Olympic Games is about far more than what happens inside the competition venues: it requires a trusted network of experts working consistently behind the scenes at every stage of an athlete’s journey. From my own experience as an athlete I understand the importance of that support first-hand, so I am delighted that we have such a brilliant team to help ensure Team GB are fully prepared to perform on the world stage at Milano Cortina 2026.”

Phil Smith, ParalympicsGB Chef de Mission at Milano Cortina 2026, said:

“ParalympicsGB aims to be the best prepared team at each and every Games, providing the optimum performance environment for athletes and support staff alike.

"Bringing in expertise from across the high performance system, especially those who have direct experience of working with our selected athletes, is a vital element to ensuring we achieve this and I would like to thank sportscotland for their support in enabling us to assemble a team of world class sports science and medicine practitioners."
