The SAMEE Recognition and Appreciation Awards 2023 took place in Glasgow recently, recognising the achievements of individuals, groups and organisations across ethnically diverse communities in Scotland.
The Scottish Association of Minority Ethnic Educators (SAMEE) is a nation-wide organisation led by education professionals from ethnically diverse backgrounds. They provide a strong voice to social, educational and professional communities empowering parents to support young people, learners to progress in their education and educators to advance in their careers.
The organisation’s unsung heroes, particularly young people, parents, carers and educators who motivate social justice and challenge inequality, are at the heart of SAMEE and the awards.
Fazia Baqir won the Sports for All Award, sponsored by sportscotland. The award recognises organisations encouraging the participation of ethnically diverse communities in sport by addressing inequalities, reducing barriers to participation and raising health awareness.
Faiza has played a pivotal role in promoting female participation in sport in the Lanarkshire region, & founded local clubs to provide Muslim girls with opportunities to engage in sport.
The SAMEE Awards were created as an annual celebration to acknowledge the outstanding contributions made by educators from ethnically diverse backgrounds. These awards serve a dual purpose, they honour individual achievements and highlight the importance of diversity in education.
