Silver success

National accreditation as a top employer for young people

sportscotland is celebrating becoming the 400th organisation to be awarded Investors in Young People (IIYP) accreditation in Scotland for recruiting, developing and retaining the talent and skills of its young people.

Seven young people involved with the national agency for sport were presented with a silver plaque at Scotstoun athletics stadium from Peter Russian, chief executive of Remarkable, the organisation which delivers the IIYP good practice framework.

Investors in Young People was launched in 2014 in response to the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce. The Scottish Government provides funding for businesses and organisations to access the IIYP programme.

 Proud achievement

Receiving the award, Stuart Ogg, sportscotland’s director of corporate services said: “We’re proud to have had Investors in People accreditation since 2000 and after achieving gold status in 2014, going for IIYP was a natural extension.

“Silver status recognises our huge commitment to the training and development of our young people. Recruiting and developing young talent is helping us build a dynamic workforce and pipeline for the future as well as introducing new skills and mind-sets into our organisation and culture. We look forward to working closely with the team at Remarkable as our ambition is to achieve gold accreditation and continue to help young people develop their careers within Scotland’s world class sporting system.”

400th accreditation

Peter Russian said: “Accrediting our 400th organisation in three years is a great achievement. sportscotland is a worthy recipient and IIYP status proves it is a leading youth employer with more than 40 staff aged 24 years or under gaining excellent experience across the fabric of the entire organisation.

“We were impressed that young employees help shape sportscotland’s corporate plan through its Young People’s sport panel and National Lottery funded Young Ambassadors programme. This accreditation demonstrates sportscotland’s meaningful youth employment practices and excellent training to enable young people to build life skills and fulfil their potential.”

National recognition

Commenting on the milestone, Scotland’s Minister for Employability and Training, Jamie Hepburn, said: “Congratulations to sportscotland for being awarded this accreditation which recognises the great work it is doing to support young people.

“By providing training and employment to young people, it is giving them the opportunity to gain confidence and skills which will help them develop their careers.

“Since its launch in July 2014, 400 organisations have received Investors in Young People accreditation which shows the importance employers are putting on youth employment in Scotland and builds on the significant progress our Developing the Young Workforce agenda has made to date.”
