Focus On ... 2023

Focus On ... 2024!

Let's take a look back at this year's Focus On articles...

Focus On ... Badminton

“Badminton can be easily adapted to meet requirements of those with a disability or additional needs. Our disability badminton clubs in Scotland focus on individual improvement, fun game play, and bringing out the best in each individual's ability, not disability.”

Focus On ... Squash

"It's been great for us to see participants pick up a racket and really embrace Squash as "their" sport. It's honestly great. However, it feels event better helping young people find their own identity. If Squash can play a small part of that, then even better"

Focus On ... Curling

“TryCurling lets participants have a go at an Olympic sport they probably thought was well out of their reach. As a coach, I just love seeing their journey from trepidation to loving curling as much as I do and screeching with delight as their stone reaches the circles.”

Focus On ... Lacrosse

“Even though women’s lacrosse and men’s lacrosse are two separate sports, we see that girls and boys take to the game with equal excitement. I’m hoping that engaging kids in lacrosse now allows them to enjoy following the sport in the 2028 Olympics - so they can say ‘I’ve played that sport before!’ when they are watching it on TV.”

Focus On ... Paddlesport

"The paddlesport community feels quite small, especially for women and girls. We want to change that by giving girls the chance to try it out. Many haven't had the opportunity, but they might discover a new passion if they're given the chance."

Focus On ... Volleyball

“Because they now understand each other more and are communicating on a deeper level, they will be able to communicate better during training and matches and may well be able to anticipate each other’s actions. So, it is as much about their team dynamics off the court as it is how they can transfer what they have learned to their game and get the results they want.”

Focus On ... Bowls

“In most sports, you’ll find that volunteers have stopped competing but that simply isn’t the case with bowls which I think makes it really special. We get so many inspiring nominations in and it's fantastic that we are able to recognise so many individuals in this way.”

Focus On ... Rowing

“The sessions are fantastic for our young people. It’s really important that we give them the choice to sit and watch if they are not comfortable going in yet. We’ve seen many of them come for weeks without going in and then one week deciding to give it a go.”

Focus On ... Fencing

“The club is focussed on sport for good. The vibe of the club has always been that sport is a tool to help people live a good life. Sport is also fun! Our approach is all about using sport to help people lead a better life."

Focus On ... Student Sport

"Sometimes people don’t realise how much they’ve developed until they reflect on it later. When they do, they realise they’ve got so much to talk about in future interviews or with employers because they’ve been building these skills all along in a non-academic, non-work setting."

Focus On ... Rugby

“Inclusion is really at the heart of the rugby community. It’s so important we find a pathway for everyone who wants to be involved with a rugby club, on the field or off it – and Kilmarnock are a fantastic example of this. Going forward, we want to keep supporting alternative game formats such as this one, but we’re also excited about new formats coming to the fore soon.”

Focus On ... Golf

“Our priority is to introduce Park Golf to more people in Scotland. It’s a sport for all ages and abilities, bridging gaps and fostering connections across our community.  Our inter-generational events are a great example of this,”

Focus On ... Swimming

“Paris 2024 made it a milestone year for swimming, para-swimming and diving as our top performers focused on what was arguably, the biggest test of their lives to date. It was a great achievement to get so many Scots on to Team GB."
