Leading the Way

New partnership launched with aim of supporting young people to be leaders in sport

We are delighted to announce a new partnership between sportscotland and the Leadership Skills Foundation. Both organisations will be working together to identify and simplify opportunities and pathways between coaching and sports leadership to benefit the Scottish sports system. sportscotland’s vision for ‘An active Scotland where everyone benefits from sport’ includes a commitment to working with partners to support the education and development of people in sport.

This is where the Leadership Skills Foundation is able to play a key role. Working together, we intend to amplify the opportunities available to young people across Scotland to support their learning and development. Ultimately, we hope to see them flourish as leaders and coaches within sport and their communities.

Formerly known as Sports Leaders UK, the Leadership Skills Foundation works with over 150 centres across Scotland to provide over 6,500 young people each year with essential leadership skills through sport-based learning, volunteering, and social action. This formalised partnership aims to build on this work and support sportscotland’s active Scotland vision.

Fiona Wernham, sportscotland’s Head of Coaching and Volunteering told us, “We work with so many amazing young people across the country and this partnership will help to create a clear pathway for young people into leadership within sport, whether as a coach, an organiser or a helper. "This partnership and our ambition to clarify the landscape is an important step in supporting young people to inspire and lead sport in their communities."

Richard Norman, Leadership Skills Foundation Chief Executive: "We work with so many fantastic centres across Scotland to deliver sports leadership to thousands of young people in Scotland. "To partner with sportscotland and the commitment of both organisations to coordinate work that spans different areas of sport will only help to provide a more coherent pathway for young people."

As we evolve our identity to the Leadership Skills Foundation, we remain committed to ensuring sports leadership continues to grow across Scotland and the UK. For us, this partnership is key to our belief that everyone should be empowered to shape their future and lead their communities.’
