Because you play ... swimming

As the National Lottery turns 25, Scottish Swimming says thank you

Dear National Lottery players,

As we celebrate the 25th birthday of the National Lottery, we would like to thank you for playing and continuing to play the National Lottery, which has benefitted and developed our sport over the last 25 years.

Since the National Lottery came to the UK in 1994, sport at all levels has benefitted significantly from the funding raised by every ticket purchased and because you play, you have directly contributed to the growth and development of sport in the UK.

Swimming is no exception. Because you play the National Lottery, we have been able to support our athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, clubs and invest in new and upgraded aquatic spaces. These fantastic facilities have attracted major international events to Scotland and continue to act as social hubs where communities come together to swim for health, fitness and fun.

As a sport for all that encourages lifelong participation from cradle to grave, we are passionate about ensuring everyone can swim and National Lottery funding has helped us to encourage people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to participate in aquatics. Through Lottery-funded Direct Club Investment we have been able to support and develop our 160 affiliated aquatics clubs, which are a focal point for community engagement, enjoyment and achievement.

National Lottery funding has also enabled us to develop our people. We have improved and enhanced our teaching and coaching programmes to deliver better-quality experiences for those involved and create a network of more qualified, more confident and more competent teachers and coaches who are passionate about helping individuals reach their full potential.

In terms of performance, National Lottery funding has enabled us to put in place programmes and an aquatic pathway for hundreds of Scottish athletes, many of whom have become successful on the world stage and inspired future generations through their hard work, commitment and resulting medal success.

Because you play the National Lottery, we are able to sustain this pathway and ensure that Scotland, as a nation, continues to punch above its weight at the top level in aquatics.

On behalf of everyone involved in aquatics and the clubs where friendships, heroes and champions are made, we thank you. Because of you, dreams do come true…

Thank you,

Euan Lowe

Chief executive, Scottish Swimming
