A Winning Partnership

How a unique partnership is helping to improve coaching in Scotland.

The sporting landscape, and the skills needed within it, are constantly changing and developing. To address this, a partnership has been formed to meet the changing needs of coaches and participants within sport in Scotland. The developing partnership held between Winning Foundation Scotland, sportscotland, Scottish Rugby and Scottish Football is to manage the roll out and delivery of the newly developed “PCS Plus” programme across Scotland.

PCS Plus is a revised and updated version of the Positive Coaching Scotland resources which have already assisted in the development of over half a million young people over the last ten years. PCS Plus equips sports clubs, coaches and parents with tools and guidance to develop young people physically, socially and psychologically, providing a holistic learning environment for young people involved in sport. PCS Plus supports the development of young people in and beyond sport, and educates key people involved in a young person’s development through a series of workshops and resources.

Stewart Harris, Chief Executive of sportscotland commented;

sportscotland have committed to a new four-year agreement to become the lead agency for the delivery of the PCS Plus programme in Scotland. This will support coaches, parents and club leaders to practically apply positive coaching within their own environment.”

Gordon Lyon, Coach Development Officer for Scottish Rugby added;

"PCS Plus has had a huge impact on how we do things at Scottish Rugby. We now have a blueprint for coaching that encourages mastery, growth and resilience, so young players can achieve their best, both on and off the field. Since embedding PCS Plus in our coaching education, we’ve seen players’ confidence, participation and even attainment levels increase."

Positive Coaching Scotland

The Positive Coaching Scotland programme was revised and updated as a direct response to the developing needs and desires of Scottish coaches to continue to improve their own skills and experiences. From this, Winning Scotland Foundation, along with their new partners, invested in refreshing the Positive Coaching Scotland content and building more resources and tools to help support clubs, coaches and parents to provide the best sporting experience for young people across the country.

Andy Gould, Head of Development at the Scottish FA said;

“The launch of PCS Plus will provide coaches and volunteers with the opportunity to develop further skills in a range of crucial areas that are important to the development of young people, both as footballers and members of society.

“A great deal of work has gone into the development of this programme and to improve and refresh the excellent work we have already achieved with Positive Coaching Scotland.”

The PCS Plus content focuses on five key areas; mastery, confidence, mindset, life skills and values. The programme supports coaches to develop these adaptive skills within a real-life coaching environment. Despite the updated content, the goal of Positive Coaching Scotland and all parties involved, remains the same; to promote a positive learning environment, enabling more young people to achieve their personal best in both sport and in life.

Morag Arnot of the Winning Scotland Foundation added;

“Our ambition is for all young people in Scotland to develop confidence and resilience, and by enabling young players in every corner of the country to access our new PCS Plus programme; the partnership goes a long way to achieving that.”
